Title: The Dead Zone
Release Date: 1983 Length: 1 hour 43 minutes Start Date: July 9, 2018 End Date: July 9, 2018 Director: David Cronenberg Starring: Christopher Walken, Brooke Adams, Martin Sheen I really need to start writing these things immediately after reading and watching the books and movies, because in all honesty, I don’t remember much about the film version of The Dead Zone. That might also mean that it just wasn’t a particularly memorable movie, but it’s probably my own fault for putting off this post for eight months. From what I do recall, I wasn’t overly impressed with this movie. I’ve never really been a fan of Christopher Walken when he’s playing anything other than wacky, and his performance in The Dead Zone is pretty wooden. Really, Martin Sheen is the best part of the movie, playing a corrupt, power-hungry politician, but he has pretty limited screen time. For the most part, this movie actually follows the book pretty closely. Until the very end. That’s when Cronenberg must have decided they needed to make all of the plot lines conveniently come together. So he has Johnny’s (Walken’s character) love interest, Sarah, volunteer for Sheen’s character, which is how Johnny meets him in the first place. When he decides to shoot Sheen’s character to prevent him from using his political power for evil, it’s Sarah’s baby who Sheen tries to use to shield himself from Johnny’s bullets. But other than adding Sarah in where she didn’t belong, the book and movie tell practically identical stories. So if you don’t want to read the book, watching the movie will pretty much cover everything for you. However, I have to recommend the book over the movie, simply because this is so far from being one of Walken’s better roles.
